COVER STORY

The Cold Finnish Light of

Miika Tenkula († 19-2-2009)

syntymä (birth)

Se oli synty Väinämöisen,

rotu rohkean runojan

kapehesta kantajasta,

Ilmattaresta emosta

(Thus our hero, Wainamoinen,

Thus the wonderful enchanter,

Was delivered from his mother,

Ilmatar, the Ether's daughter)

"think about all the good in your life - it's only temporary

think about all the positive sides in life - they never last forever"

Sentenced: 'Nepenthe'

metsä (the forest)

Sanoi vanha Väinämöinen:

"Siksipä on tuo jätetty

koivahainen kasvamahan:

sinulle kukuntapuuksi"

(Spake the ancient Wainamoinen:

"Therefore I have left the birch-tree,

Left the birch-tree only growing,

Home for thee for joyful singing")

"The wintry frost comes crawling

ceasing all life that's on its way

Dead frozen leaves come falling

hovering in the air with the rain"

Sentenced: 'Dead Leaves'

meri (the sea)

Mikäli meren vesiä, sikäli minun veriä;

mikäli meren kaloja, sikäli minun lihoja;

mikä rannalla risuja, se on kurjan kylkiluita;

mikä rannan heinäsiä, se hivusta hierottua.

(All the waters in the blue-sea

Shall be blood of Aino's body;

All the fish that swim these waters

Shall be Aino's flesh forever;

All the willows on the sea-side

Shall be Aino's ribs hereafter;

All the sea-grass on the margin

Will have grown from Aino's tresses)

"Love, my fate

Will you wait for me there...

where our autumn dawns?

There, beyond the dreary seas

Will you wait?

Will you welcome me into your arms once more?

Where our waters still fall free!"

Sentenced: 'Cross My Heart and Hope to Die'

kipu & tuska (pain & agony)

Syäntäni tuimelevi, päätäni kivistelevi.

Eikä tuima tuimemmasti, kipeämmästi kivistä,

jotta, koito, kuolisinki, katkeaisinki, katala,

näiltä suurilta suruilta, ape'ilta miel'aloilta.

(Woe is me, my life hard-fated!

Woe to Aino, broken-hearted!

Torture racks my heart and temples,

Yet the sting would not be deeper,

Nor the pain and anguish greater,

If beneath this weight of sorrow,

In my saddened heart's dejection,

I should yield my life forever,

Now unhappy, I should perish!)

"No way out of your misery

Alone in pain and agony

Lay depressed and hollow

One thought in your mind

- No Tomorrow"

Sentenced: 'Noose'

pilvi (cloud)

Oisiko emo elossa, vanhempani valvehella,

sepä saattaisi sanoa, miten pystössä pysyä,

murehisin murtumatta, huolihin katoamatta

näissä päivissä pahoissa, ape'issa miel'aloissa!

(Only were my ancient mother

Living on the face of Northland,

Surely she would well advise me,

What my thought and what my action,

That this cup of grief might pass me,

That this sorrow might escape me,

And this darkened cloud pass over.)

Now every single cloud becomes a raging storm

as I go seeking for the one I used to live for

since your love was taken away

my heart's been beating empty beats

Sentenced: 'The Rain Comes Falling Down'

vuotaa verta (bleed)

Oi Ukko, ylinen luoja, taivahallinen jumala!

Tule tänne tarvittaissa, käy tänne kutsuttaessa!

Tunge turpea kätesi, paina paksu peukalosi

tukkeheksi tuiman reiän, paikaksi pahan veräjän!

Veä päälle lemmen lehti, kultalumme luikahuta

veren tielle telkkimeksi, tulevalle tukkeheksi,

jottei parsku parralleni, valu vaaterievuilleni!

("Ukko, God of love and mercy,

God and Master Of the heavens,

Come thou hither, thou art needed,

Come thou quickly I beseech thee,

Lend thy hand to aid thy children,

Touch this wound with healing fingers,

Stop this hero's streaming life-blood,

Bind this wound with tender leaflets,

Mingle with them healing flowers,

Thus to check this crimson current,

Thus to save this great magician,

Save the life of Wainamoinen.")

"Cursed be this love I bear

Bereaved be this heart that bleeds for her

The love of the man lives here

On grain and the earth, rain and the chilling air"

Sentenced: 'For the Love I Bear'

routa (frost)

Läksi luoen luotehesen tuolle Pohjolan merelle.

Silloin Pohjolan emäntä pakkasen pahan lähetti

tuolle Pohjolan merelle, ulapalle aukealleule.

Itse tuon sanoiksi virkki, sekä käski jotta lausui:

"Pakko poika pienokainen, oma kaunis kasvattini!

Lähe tuonne, kunne käsken, kunne käsken ja kehoitan!

Kylmä veitikän venonen, pursi lieto Lemminkäisen

selvälle meren selälle, ulapalle aukealle!

Kylmä itseki isäntä, jää'ä veitikkä vesille,

jottei pääse päivinänsä, selviä sinä ikänä,

kun en pääsne päästämähän, kerinne kehittämähän!"

("Quick the wicked hostess, Louhi,

Sends the black-frost of the heavens

To the waters of Pohyola,

O'er the far-extending sea-plains,

Gave the black-frost these directions:

"Much-loved Frost, my son and hero,

Whom thy mother has instructed,

Hasten whither I may send thee,

Go wherever I command thee,

Freeze the vessel of this hero,

Lemminkainen's bark of magic,

On the broad back of the ocean,

On the far-extending waters;

Freeze the wizard in his vessel,

Freeze to ice the wicked Ahti,

That he never more may wander,

Never waken while thou livest,

Or at least till I shall free him,

Wake him from his icy slumber!"")

"What is it that we’re struggling for?

I don’t quite see it anymore

Life kicks us in the teeth

Yet something makes us crawl back for more.."

Sentenced: 'Blood and Tears'

kuu (the moon)

Kuu, keritä, päivyt, päästä, otava, yhä opeta

miestä ouoilta ovilta, veräjiltä vierahilta,

näiltä pieniltä pesiltä, asunnoilta ahtahilta!

Saata maalle matkamiestä, ilmoillen inehmon lasta,

kuuta taivon katsomahan, päiveä ihoamahan,

otavaista oppimahan, tähtiä tähyämähän!

(Take, O Moon, I pray thee, take me,

Take me, thou, O Sun above me,

Take me, thou O Bear of heaven,

From this dark and dreary prison,

From these unbefitting portals,

From this narrow place of resting,

From this dark and gloomy dwelling,

Hence to wander from the ocean, Hence to walk upon the islands,

On the dry land walk and wander,

Like an ancient hero wander,

Walk in open air and breathe it,

Thus to see the moon at evening,

Thus to see the silver sunlight,

Thus to see the Bear in heaven,

That the stars I may consider.)

"Dead Moon Rising

Bleeding red light over the sea

 - I hope this time She came for me

- I hope this time She sets me free"

Sentenced: 'Dead Moon Rising'

lumihiutaleiden (snowflakes)

Ututyttö Terhenetär! Seulo seulalla utua,

 terhenistä tepsuttele viljan vierimäsijoille,

jottei kuule kulkevaksi eik' on eestäni pakene!

(Terhenetar, ether-maiden,

Daughter of the fog and snow-flake,

Sift the fog and let it settle

O'er the bills and lowland thickets,

Where the wild-bear feeds and lingers,

That he may not see my coming,

May not hear my stealthy footsteps!)

"The deadly shadows fall

and the bleeding sun sinks down below

The first flakes of snow guide me on my last pathway"

Sentenced: 'Dead Leaves'

liekki (flame)

Ohoh armas Ahtiseni! Ellös lähtekö sotahan!

Näin mä unta maatessani, sike'in levätessäni:

tuli ahjona ajeli, valkea välähtelihe aivan ikkunan alatse, periseinän penkeretse;

siitä tuiskahti tupahan, koskena kohahtelihe

siltalauoista lakehen, ikkunasta akkunahan."

(My beloved husband, Ahti,

Do not go to war, I pray thee.

In the evening I lay sleeping.

Slumbering I saw in dream-land

Fire upshooting from the chimney,

Flames arising, mounting skyward,

From the windows of this dwelling,

From the summits of these rafters,

Piercing through our upper chambers,

Eoaring like the fall of waters.

Leaping from the floor and ceiling,

Darting from the halls and doorways.)

"The burning light between us is already starting to fade

The fire in our hearts is smothered by the rain

and the crimson flame of passion turns into something gray"

Sentenced: 'Killing Me, Killing You'

taistelua (battle)

Sanoi vanha Väinämöinen: "Entä jos minä menisin

noihin suurihin sotihin, tasapäihin tappeloihin,

joss' on verta säärivarsi, polven korkeus punaista?"

(Spake the hero of the Northland:

"To the wars my ship is sailing,

To the bloody fields of battle,

Where the streams run scarlet-colored,

Where the paths are paved with bodies!")

"In the crimson moonlight the battle is raging at its height

there...somewhere...

I bleed and scream

take me over the stream - to my dream"

Sentenced: 'Forever Lost'

kivi (rock)

Astui päivän, astui toisen. Päivänäpä kolmantena

ennätti meri etehen, ruokoranta vastahansa:

tuohon yöhyt yllättävi, pimeä piättelevi

Siinä itki impi illan, kaikerteli kaiken yötä

rannalla vesikivellä, laajalla lahen perällä.

Aamulla ani varahin katsoi tuonne niemen päähän:

kolme oli neittä niemen päässä ... ne on merta kylpemässä.

(All day long poor Aino wandered,

All the next day, sad and weary,

So the third from morn till evening,

Till the cruel night enwrapped her,

As she reached the sandy margin,

Reached the cold and dismal sea-shore,

Sat upon the rock of sorrow,

Sat alone in cold and darkness, Listened only to the music

Of the winds and rolling billows,")

"I'll throw the First Rock

I'll throw the first one

You'll crumble to the ground

As I throw the rock that brings you ...

down"

Sentenced: 'I'll Throw The First Rock'

kuolema (death)

Niin yönä yheksäntenä, kaheksannen päivän päästä

toki tuskaksi tulevi, painuvi pakolliseksi,

kun ei ole kynttä varpahissa eikä sormissa niveltä.

(On the evening of the eighth day,

Wainamoinen grew disheartened,

Felt a very great discomfort,

For his feet had lost their toe-nails,

And his fingers dead and dying)

"The fire in my eyes is dying

and the dream I had is gone"

Sentenced: 'Broken'

hautajaiset (funeral)

Ei ole miestä mennehessä eikä tuiki tullehessa:

jo silt' on siika silmät syönyt, hauki hartiat halaisnut.

Sie päästä merehen miestä, työnnä Tuonelan jokehen!

Ehkä turskaksi tulisi, valahaksi vahvistuisi.

(There is not in these a hero,

Thou canst not revive these fragments;

Eels have fed upon his body,

On his eyes have fed the whiting;

Cast the dead upon the waters,

On the streams of Tuonela,

Let him there become a walrus,

Or a seal, or whale, or porpoise.)

"Is life over, this life's over?

Or has it only just begun?

It grows colder, starts to moulder...

Coming apart yet still not done "

Sentenced: 'The End of the Road'

"He's gone, he is dead

His remains upon the hearse ahead

As silently we wander though the mist

He's free

This is the end

Your journey's over, night descends

Below... Into the abyss

Farewell, my friend, you will be missed

Lower the flags

A good man has passed

He has reached the last of frontiers

Lower the flags

Down to half-mast

For again the world has taken a turn for the worse"

Sentenced: 'Lower The Flags'

surra (mourn)

Sentenced: 'Mourn'

elämä (life)

Ellös nyt, hyvä isoni, ellös, ehtoinen emoni,

tahi muu sukuni suuri, heimokuntani heleä,

tuosta huolelle ruvetko, saako suurelle surulle,

jos menenki muille maille, kulkenen johonkuhunki!

Paistanevi Luojan päivä, kuu Luojan kumottanevi,

tähet taivon välkynevi, otavat ojentunevi

ilmassa etempänäki, maailmassa muuallaki,

ei yksin ison pihoilla, näillä kasvinkartanoilla

(Never, never, aged father,

Never, thou, beloved mother,

Never, ye, my kindred spirits,

Never harbor care, nor sorrow,

Never fall to bitter weeping,

Since thy child has gone to others,

To the distant home of strangers,

To the meadows of Wainola,

From her father's fields and firesides.

Shines the Sun of the Creator,

Shines the golden Moon of Ukko,

Glitter all the stars of heaven,

In the firmament of ether,

Full as bright on other homesteads;

Not upon my father's uplands,

Not upon my home in childhood,

Shines the Star of Joyance only.)

"We came so far

So deeply wounded and so scarred our despair-ridden hearts

Frail as we are

Firmly united we will stand 'til the world falls apart"

Sentenced: 'Despair - Ridden Hearts'
